All Mixed Up

To start preschool off with a bang (or maybe a fzzzzzssshhh), we made the classic volcanoes.  Of course, this is an absolute favorite among the little ones I know!

We make a lot of planned mixtures, like moon sand:

But finally I forced myself to stop cringing at the spills, waste, and seemingly purposeless mixing the kids always want to do afterward.  And AMAZING things began to happen!

More "pleases" and "thank you's" were heard on the day the kids mixed mud pies and garnished their dishes with every type of vegetation they could find.

When I let them mix Dixie cups of vinegar, baking soda, corn starch, flour, water, corn syrup, and vegetable oil to their hearts content, they began asking each other for advice, teaching one another their new recipes, and even saying things like, "aahhhh, I mixed bases and nothing happened!"

Amazing things happen when you give children the tools they need to learn and a few basic lessons.  They will grow more than ever when they can direct their own education.
